Honoring the Life and Legacy of George Joseph
Founder and Chairman · 1921–2026
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of George Joseph, Mercury's beloved Founder and longtime Chairman. He was 104 years old.
Mr. Joseph's life was defined by service, curiosity, determination, and an enduring commitment to helping people. Those qualities reflect the values at the heart of Mercury: doing the right thing, seeking a better way, owning it, and moving quickly. His vision and leadership shaped Mercury for more than six decades, and his influence will continue to guide the Company for years to come.

A Life of Service, Curiosity, and Innovation
The son of Lebanese immigrants, Mr. Joseph was raised in Beckley, West Virginia, during the Great Depression. In 1941, he volunteered for military service and served as a B-17 navigator during World War II, flying 50 missions. He later attended Harvard on the GI Bill and graduated in 1949 with a degree in math and physics.
He began his career working for the Occidental Life Insurance Company in Los Angeles as an actuary and later started working evenings as a life insurance salesman. As a salesman, many of his customers began asking about auto and home insurance, so he tried to persuade Occidental management to allow its agents to offer a full line of coverage. When the company declined, his remedy was to begin packaging auto and home insurance from another company with the Occidental life policies he was already selling.
As he began selling auto and home insurance, he noticed that auto insurance carriers lacked segmentation. Customers with significantly different risk characteristics were charged the same rate, which reduced access to insurance.
This led to his belief that the private passenger auto insurance system simply wasn’t very flexible. Mr. Joseph decided he could create a new system by developing an insurance company that used a wider variety of factors to create fair and equitable rates for a variety of drivers. He founded Mercury, and the Company sold its first policy in 1962.
We called our Company Mercury because I wanted us to be fast and nimble, just like the Roman god of business and merchants. He was also responsible for delivering good news to people on Earth, which is exactly what we do for Mercury customers every day.
A Lasting Legacy
Mr. Joseph served as Chairman from the Company’s founding and led Mercury as Chief Executive Officer for 45 years, through 2006. After stepping down as CEO, he remained deeply engaged in the Company as its Executive Chairman.
Under Mr. Joseph’s leadership as CEO, Mercury grew from a small California insurer with six employees and 90 agents into the largest independent agency writer of private passenger automobile insurance in California. During his tenure as CEO, the Company completed a public offering in 1985, expanded beyond California beginning in 1989, and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1996. The Company’s written premiums grew to just over $1 billion in 1997 and broke the $3 billion mark in 2006.
Mr. Joseph was also recognized during his career for his contributions to the insurance industry, including being named “Company Person of the Year” by the Professional Insurance Agents Association in 1987. Mercury also earned repeated national recognition, including multiple appearances on Forbes’ list of America’s Most Trustworthy Companies.
Mr. Joseph’s love for his family, Mercury, and tennis was evident to all who knew him. He cared deeply about Mercury team members and once said: “Without you, Mercury is nothing. We’re just cement, wood and leather.”
Mr. Joseph is survived by his wife, five children and 10 grandchildren. Reflecting on his legacy, he once said, “I hope I’ll be remembered for the contribution I’ve made to the insurance industry, and the changes Mercury has pioneered that have led to billions of dollars in savings for consumers.”

Leadership Continuity and Succession
Effective immediately, Mercury’s Board of Directors has appointed Gabriel Tirador as Chairman of the Board. Tirador, who has served as Mercury’s Chief Executive Officer since 2007 and is a member of the Company’s Board of Directors, will also continue to be the Company’s CEO.
“George Joseph built Mercury on the belief that customers deserved quality insurance, fair pricing, and personal service. He was an innovative leader who created more flexible, quality insurance products that served a larger share of society. He saw opportunities in underwriting, distribution, and the disciplined use of data to deliver more value to customers. His vision shaped not only Mercury but also the way many in our industry think about underwriting, rating, and service. We mourn his passing, celebrate his extraordinary life, and will honor his legacy by staying true to the principles he established.”
— Gabe Tirador, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Joseph’s son, Victor Joseph, has served as Mercury’s President and Chief Operating Officer since January 2024 and was elected to the Company’s Board of Directors in 2024. He has held several positions at the Company since 2009, and his progression through the organization reflects the depth of operating experience supporting Mercury's future.
Mr. Joseph’s wife, Vicky Joseph, has assumed ownership of his Mercury General stock. She was elected to the Company’s Board of Directors in 2021.
Remembering George Joseph
Mr. Joseph built an extraordinary legacy at Mercury, and the Company will continue to honor his memory by carrying forward the principles that defined his leadership: service, accountability, a commitment to helping others, and the courage to seek a better way.
